The Art of Choice: How Your Decisions Shape the Story

Most games give you the illusion of choice. Embertold gives you the real thing.

How the AI Responds to You

The AI Game Master doesn't follow a script. It has a starting premise, a set of characters, and a world full of lore — but what happens between point A and point B is entirely up to you.

When you type an action, the AI considers:

  • Your character's stats — Can you realistically pull this off?
  • The current situation — Who's present, what's at stake, what just happened?
  • Your history — Past choices, relationships, inventory, health
  • The world's lore — What's plausible in this universe?

Then it generates a response that's consistent with all of the above.

Types of Choices

Dialogue

Talk to NPCs in natural language. Threaten them, charm them, lie to them, or befriend them. The AI models NPC personalities — a proud knight won't respond to intimidation the same way a nervous merchant will.

Exploration

Go where you want. Enter the suspicious cave. Climb the tower. Search the body. The AI generates environments and details based on the world's lore and your current location.

Combat

When words fail, actions speak. Describe your combat moves and the AI resolves them based on your stats and the situation. A clever flanking maneuver from a high-Dexterity rogue plays differently than a brute-force charge from a high-Strength warrior.

Moral Dilemmas

The best moments come when there's no right answer. Do you save the village or chase the villain? Do you keep the cursed artifact for its power or destroy it? The AI doesn't judge — it shows you the consequences.

Consequences Are Real

Embertold tracks everything:

  • Inventory changes — Items you pick up, use, or lose affect what's available to you later.
  • Health and damage — Take too much damage and you're in real trouble. Reach zero and the adventure may end in defeat.
  • NPC relationships — Help someone and they might return the favor. Betray them and they'll remember.
  • World state — Your actions can change the political landscape, open new paths, or close them forever.

Tips for Meaningful Play

  • Think before you act. The AI rewards deliberation. Rushing in is a valid strategy, but so is pausing to observe.
  • Embrace failure. Not every plan works. The AI turns failures into compelling story beats — sometimes the best moments come from things going wrong.
  • Play your character, not yourself. If your character is impulsive, let them be impulsive. If they're cautious, let them hang back. Consistent characterization leads to richer stories.
  • Try the unexpected. The AI can handle creative solutions. Try diplomacy in combat. Try stealing from your allies. Try cooking a meal for the dragon. You might be surprised.

There's no "Game Over" screen waiting to punish you. There's just your story, unfolding one choice at a time.
