How to Play D&D Solo with AI: Getting Started with Embertold

So you've heard about Embertold and you want to try a solo tabletop RPG with an AI game master. Here's exactly how to get started.
What is Embertold?
Embertold is a text-based RPG where an AI runs the Game Master for you, one-on-one. Think of it as a dungeon master who's always available, always improvising, and never running out of things to say. Every choice you type shapes the story, and no two playthroughs turn out the same.
Step 1: Create Your Account
Head to embertold.com and sign up. It takes about 30 seconds — you'll need an email address, and you're in.
Step 2: Choose a Universe
Embertold features curated fantasy universes, each with its own lore, factions, and history, indexed so the AI can draw on it accurately. Browse the available worlds and pick one that speaks to you.
Step 3: Pick or Create an Adventure
Each universe has one or more adventures — the stories you'll play through. Adventures come with a premise, a starting situation, and pre-built characters you can choose from (or create your own).
Want to tell your own story? Embertold's AI-assisted adventure wizard walks you through a 10-step process — from setting a premise to designing encounters and NPCs — with AI suggestions grounded in universe lore at every step. Accept them, edit them, or write your own, then publish your adventure for others to discover.
Step 4: Create Your Character
You'll allocate stats using a point-buy system inspired by classic tabletop RPGs: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
These aren't just flavor numbers. When your action calls for a roll — picking a lock, talking your way past a guard, spotting a hidden trap — the Game Master rolls a d20 against a difficulty class and adds your character's modifier, the same math a tabletop DM would use. High Dexterity means better odds at stealth; high Charisma means better odds at persuasion. You'll see the roll happen on screen, not hidden behind the curtain.
You'll also write a backstory, choose a name, and optionally generate an AI portrait.
Step 5: Start Playing
Once your character is ready, hit "Start Session" and the AI Game Master takes over. It sets the scene, describes your surroundings, introduces NPCs, and presents choices. Type your actions in plain language — there are no fixed commands. Say what you want to do, and the story responds.
Coming Back Later
You don't have to finish in one sitting. Close the tab whenever you want — nothing is lost. When you return, Embertold shows you a short "Previously on..." recap of your last few exchanges before you dive back in, so you're never left guessing where you left off.
Tips for New Players
- Be specific. Instead of "I attack," try "I draw my shortsword and aim for the goblin's exposed flank." The AI rewards detail with richer narration.
- Explore freely. There's no single "correct" path. Talk to NPCs, investigate objects, try unexpected approaches.
- Turn on Immersion Mode if you want generated scene images, sound effects, ambient audio, and NPC voices alongside the text. See Immersion Mode for what it does.
- Try a skill you're bad at. A low-Strength scholar failing to kick down a door is often a more memorable moment than an easy success.
- Your choices matter. The Game Master tracks your inventory, health, relationships, and past decisions — what you do early can ripple through the rest of the adventure.
What's Free?
Core text gameplay is completely free. You can play full adventures, create characters, and enjoy the complete narrative experience at no cost. Immersion features (images, sound effects, AI voices) use credits, and every free account gets a monthly credit allowance on top of that — plus cached content is always free, so frequently encountered scenes cost nothing.
Welcome to Embertold. Your story begins now.
